The ‘96-’98 Cobra is a great car but the 4V lacks low and mid range punch. That’s why Ford rpm “staged” or “delayed” opening all 4 inlet ports simultaneously. It hurt low end torque. The Kenne Bell Kit gives the ‘96-’98 4.6 that much needed HP and torque boost in low and mid range - and plenty on the top end. Gears help but hurt fuel economy and increase engine wear. And centrifugal superchargers make good top end power but don’t supply the much needed higher boost for low and mid range performance. This is a powerful, quiet, flexible kit that really brings the car to life. Standard Kit is 6 psi (91 octane) or 8 psi (94 octane) with plenty of room to grow to 11 psi without intercooling (see “Octane”). |

| A whopping increase of 135HP (440 vs 305) and 123 ft lbs torque (426 vs 303). This one will turn anyone's head around. "Top engine" design mounts supercharger where it belongs - on top of the 4.6 - not on the side or in between the radiator and water pump. Included with the kit is the new Kenne Bell ultra high flow "open house" manifold. No manifold will ever flow more air then this beauty. | HIGH OCTANE vs. INTERCOOLING Because of the high cost and complexity in intercooling the ‘96-’98 Cobra engine, our customers choosing to run the higher boost levels allowed by an intercooler, use the alternate method - higher fuel octane. It’s easy and economical. Keep in mind intercoolers DO NOT “make” more HP. They ONLY allow an engine to run higher boost (approx. 3-4 psi) whether it be intercooled or non intercooled. Good octane booster with pump gas (see above table) or an intercooler BOTH allow the engine to run 3-4 psi higher boost. So you can use the “octane booster and higher boost pulley” combo for everyday driving or only on weekends or for drag racing. A simple easy pulley change requires a mere 4 minutes. It allows the best of both worlds. 6-7 psi on 91-94 octane pump gas or 8-11 psi (approx. 12HP/psi) with octane booster. All of us at Kenne Bell use octane booster in both our intercooled and non intercooled cars. Fuel octane is the only limitation to running higher boost and we like all we can get.
OCTANE BOOSTERS DRAG STRIP PERFORMANCE BOOST-A-PUMP™ - Set Kenne Bell BOOST-A-PUMP for boost levels shown above. The engine can't make horsepower without fuel. Higher boost increases engine horsepower and air flow through the engine. An increase in fuel delivery and fuel octane is necessary to keep pace. IGNITION / PLUGS - Close plug gap to .035". If ignition is still inadequate (evidenced by engine miss) install the Kenne Bell BOOST-A-SPARK™. Install new 1 heat range cooler NGK TR6 spark plugs. CHIPS - A variety of custom Kenne Bell MONO and SWITCH CHIP designs wherein we alter the fuel and spark curves for specific applications are available. Ford Cobra OBD2 computers from 1996-‘98 - we have calibrated chips for all. PULLEYS - The big Kenne Bell 2.1L BIG BORE™ is capable of developing up to 20 psi boost. HEADERS - Not worth the high cost. 5-10HP at best. EXHAUST - No HP gain, but sounds good. X PIPE - 10HP. COOL AIR KIT - Dent in inlet tube for strut brace restricts power by 10HP. Use the ‘98 tube with Kenne Bell Cool Air Kit.
